Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1798-12-17
The Right Honorable Lord Nelson K.B.
This print is after a painting of Admiral Lord Nelson by the artist Lemuel Francis Abbott. Nelson sat for numerous portraits during his career.
Nelson is shown following the Battle of the Nile, which took place in 1798 and resulted in the defeat of the French fleet. Wearing full-dress naval uniform, he is shown with an empty sleeve, having lost his right arm during a battle the previous year. The Battle of the Nile medal hangs around his neck. His success in Egypt came at a cost, however. During the Battle of Nile, Nelson received a serious head wound and suffered from physical exhaustion.
