Warren Hastings, Esqr., Governor General of Bengal
This print of Warren Hastings is after an oil painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, dated between 1767 and 1768. The portrait was commissioned by the sitter before he was appointed the first Governor-General of India in 1772. In it, Hastings is shown seated at a desk with a quill pen and ink pot, papers and a Persian seal nearby.
Between 1772 and 1785, when this print was published, Hastings served in India, where he established British civil administration in the country. During his time there, the East India Company evolved from a trading company to a military power. Upon Hastings' return to England, he was impeached following charges of corruption and mismanagement in India. He was tried but later acquitted.
