Dr Syntax
This handkerchief is covered with a collage of different scenes from 'Dr Syntax', a series of comic prints by the satirical artist Thomas Rowlandson. The character of Dr Syntax was created by Rowlandson and the writer William Combe, and his travels around Britain were told as a satirical narrative, mocking wealthy and educated tourists who went looking for sublime aesthetic experiences.
