A Representation of the King of Denmark's Masquerade at Ranelagh Gardens
Ranelagh Gardens was a public pleasure garden located in Chelsea, London. It operated from 1742 to 1803. It was considered more expensive and fashionable than its nearby rival, Vauxhall Gardens. Ranelagh was painted several times by the Venetian artist Canaletto, and the scene on this handkerchief is derived from his painting of the rotunda and Chinese pavilion.
