The North West Prospect of St. Paul's Cathedral in London
Sir Christopher Wren’s St Paul’s Cathedral, with its massive dome, arose from the ashes of the Great Fire. The origins of this most iconic of London's buildings are commemorated in carvings of the phoenix, which decorate its exterior. In fact, Wren was already planning to restore the Old St Paul’s, which was in poor repair when it was gutted in 1666. Two years later, he was commissioned to design a brand new cathedral, which should be ‘to the reputation of the City and the nation’.
