Printed Ephemera — 1829
Handkerchief, commemorative handkerchief
The silk broadside commemorates the opening of the new Fleet Market, subsequently known as Farringdon Market in 1829. Located between Farringdon Street east and Shoe Lane west, the new market replaced the old Fleet Market demolished for the widening of Farringdon Street and Farringdon Road.
It is likely that the jobbing printer Quick, best known for printing paper broadsides also printed this souvenir on paper. Broadsides commemorating key London events were particularly popular with the 'London crowd' . This example was 'printed on the spot' suggesting that Quick literally carted his printing press to the site to take advantage of the commercial opportunity of selling both paper and silk editions of the souvenir to the mass crowds gathered to witness the opening of this new London landmark.
