Social History — 2014
Hashhush
'Hashhush' by Hilde Krohn Huse is a visual depiction of a twitter event. This time based media artwork was commissioned by the Museum of London for the digital light curtain and screen in the Sackler Hall of the museum.
On the screen the viewer sees an actor's mouth reading out a selection of tweets, collected during the Olympic Games in 2012. Travelling around the light curatin is the waveform s of the audio signal created by the actor’s voice as she reads out each tweet. The waveform changes colour according to the content of the tweet being read out: blue for plain text, red for #, green for an @ sign, which is a reference to another twitter account, and purple for a link to a photograph, website, video etc. Her voice is muted to imitate the millions of social media conversations happening around us every second of the day.
The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were an iconic event for our city, which the museum wanted to record for posterity. We set out to capture the experience by collecting tweets that were about living or being in London during the Games. The museum pledged to collect any tweet that included the hashtag #citizencurators. Over 6,000 tweets and retweets were collected. Together they form traces and memories of this extraordinary London event. In 2014 the Museum of London partnered with the Slade School of Fine Art to invite a student working in new media to reinterpret the #citizencurators twitter archive.
