Post-Medieval — Tudor; 1500-1550
Aglet
A very fine gold aglet formed from a gold sheet tube decorated with twisted gold wire. Aglets are also known as lace-ends or lace-chapes and were attached to the ends of laces or ribbons that were used in the fastening (lacing) or attachment of clothing. Plain copper-alloy sheet aglets are commonly found dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods. It is rarer to find examples, such as this, which would have been worn by the aristocracy or even royalty. This aglet was found on the Thames foreshore near Greenwich. Greenwich Palace was a favourite residence of the Tudors and birthplace of Henry VIII, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
