One of a pair of ruffled cuffs made of off-white silk organza, with central band covered with black wool braid and decorated with round cut-glass or paste diamantés, fastening with a hook and eye. Worn by Anna Pavlova in 'Les Coquetteries de Columbine' with matching collar. The costume's tutu was short with a stand out skirt and strapless bodice (See National Library of Australia image vn3409677).
'The Coquetteries of Columbine' was probably based on part of Marius Petipa's 1900 work Harlequinade, drawing on the traditions of the Commedia dell'Arte and the romantic entanglements of Pierrot, Harlequin, and Columbine.
Coquetteries de Columbine was a short divertissement created in 1912. Pavlova had a new costume made for her 1913-1914 American Tour. The cuffs and ruff at the MOL appear to date form this version. Pavlova continued to perform this role throughout the 1920s.
