Muff, ballet costume muff
Muff worn by Anna Pavlova in Christmas, New York, 1916.
This pink silk muff trimmed with white marabou was designed by Pavlova herself for the divertissement Christmas. This divertissement was devised in New York in 1916 and premièred at annual Christmas Week Bazaar at the Seventy-first Regiment Armory. Christmas was choreographed to the December waltz from Tchaikovsky’s The Seasons. The ballet showed Pavlova arriving at a Christmas party with an escort and then flirting with four men who present her with gifts.
Christmas appears to have remained a popular piece in Pavlova’s repertoire throughout the 1920s.
