Coat
Worn (also 81.259/2-5) by Mr & Mrs Lyon as Pearly King and Queen of Shoreditch in 1925. They became Pearlies by 'joining a club and paying some money and signing something'.
Suits were made in 1925 when Mrs. Lyon bought the buttons by the gross and sewed them on by hand. Mr. Lyon's suit has 22,000 buttons. See correspondence in 'Documents' and obituary notice in Correspondence file.
Worn by Mr Herbert Lyon as Pearly King of Shoreditch; the suit was decorated by his wife; when the Lyons moved to Ongar they were adopted as the local pearlies and last wore their costumes in Ongar for the celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II's Silver Jubilee in 1977. Mr Lyon was a chimney sweep. There is a photograph of Mr & Mrs Lyon in their costumes in the Museum of London archive.
