Social History — 1870-1950
Press, screw press, dies, cutters, artificial flower-making equipment
This screw press was used with moulded dies to press natural-looking veins into artificial flowers and leaves.
The artificial flower-making trade in London grew in the 1860s and was concentrated largely in Clerkenwell, St Luke's and Hoxton. It supplied artificial flowers to milliners and dressmakers and makers of room decorations.
The catalogue to “The Daily News” Sweated Industries’ Exhibition held at Queen’s Hall, Queens Road, Bayswater in 1906 described artificial flower-making as “one of the
most interesting of London Home Industries. It is also one of the worst paid."
