Scarf, scarf (ensemble)
Wool ensemble of cardigan, tank top, scarf and trousers, autumn/winter 1975-6. Designed by Bill Gibb.
A graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, Bill Gibb started his career in the experimental climate of 1960s with his first collection sold in the Kensington boutique 'Alice and Paul'. He designed a range of clothing for Henri Bendel in New York and in 1970 was voted designer of the year by British Vogue. Gibb's collaboration with the designer Kaffe Fassett brought him much acclaim. The two worked with knitted and woven textiles to create tactile and colourful clothing in loose and flowing styles. His signature motif was a bee, which featured in many of his garments. He was most noted for his evening gowns and layered knitwear designs.
This outfit is called 'Moon and Buddha' referring to the pattern of motifs knitted into the garments. The eastern theme is continued in the cut of the large cardigan which echoes the T-shape of a kimono gown.
