Waistcoat
Waistcoat in raw white silk with flower motifs brocaded in green and pink silk and silver thread on yellow silk core. High round neck, sleeveless. Six gold coloured buttons remain at centre front opening, each embossed with an identical flower design. Lined with off-white linen. Linen back. c 1770.
Catalogue note by Natalie Rothstein. A summer waistcoat woven in silk and linen and brocaded with sprigs in green and tan silk and silver strip wound on a yellow silk core to suggest gold. Repeat width: 3 7/8 inches; height: 5 1/4 inches. It is lined with plain linen now badly foxed. The buttons are modern but is is otherwise a good waistcoat exhibitable if cleaned and the modern buttons removed (these could be replaced with plain linen covered ones slightly dyed to match). NB The cut reveals the date. It is interesting also as a summer waistcoat.
