Fashion — 1771-1780
Suit
The three parts of this suit are made of the same fabric: green, so-called 'shot' silk. Silk of this type was made with differently coloured warp and wefts, which meant that the fabric took on a slightly different hue depending on which angle it was looked at.
The edges and the pockets of the coat and waistcoat are embroidered and so are the cuffs of the breeches. The embroidery would have been applied to the fabric before it was cut out.
Of particular note is the back of the right leg of the breeches. This was made using a large fabric patch shaped like a sleeve piece. One corner of this inserted part seems to show perspiration marks. It is not clear whether the coat was originally made like this or was altered following an incident that damaged the breeches.
The fine fabric and embroidery of this coat implies that it was probably made for special occasions and it could certainly have been worn at court.
