Cap, organisational uniform cap
This Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) hat was part of the uniform worn by the donor's mother who lived in Faringdon in Berkshire. WVS members were known as the 'women in green'. The clothes are dated 1942 and were designed by Digby Morton, a London couturier who was well known for his tailoring skills and his ability to make feminine, stylish but practical suits.
The Women's Voluntary Service was established in 1938 under the management of Stella, Lady Reading, to provide support and help for civilians during the Second World War. They ran soup kitchens and tea stalls, helped with evacuees and organised thrift shops. During the war the service had a million members of whom only two hundred were salaried. The organisation is now known as the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
The cap is made green and grey herringbone wool tweed with a stiffened peak, trimmed with band of dark red petersham with bow centre front of peak. It is lined with blue-grey twilled cotton.
