Coat
Linen coat, 1971. Designed by Bellville Sassoon.
David Sassoon designed this coat for Bellville Sassoon's spring/summer collection in 1971. It was called Astrid. The coat is made from cream linen printed with stylised leaf and flower motifs in pink, tan, turquoise, mid-blue and royal blue. It fastens with large cream plastic buttons that resemble flower buds.
Sassoon joined the London fashion designer Belinda Bellville after graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1958. They became partners and working under the label 'Bellville Sassoon' soon won a following for their softly fashioned clothing and striking special occasion wear. In 1998 British Vogue paid tribute to his forty years in fashion with an interview that highlighted the changes he had witnessed. For Sassoon the 'biggest revolution' was that 'there are no longer rituals, no rules for dressing up - that all went in the Seventies'.
