Importing frozen meat
The Mataura was built in Lanark, Glasgow as the ‘Dunfillan’ in 1868. She was purchased by the New Zealand Shipping Company in 1873 and fitted with Haslam’s Patent Freezing Machinery, for the frozen meat trade. In 1882 she was re-rigged as a barque. In 1883 she delivered the second cargo of frozen meat to London. In August 1900 she was dismasted in the Pacific Ocean and abandoned.
