Shawl
This shawl of crepe de chine silk was hand-painted by Gwen Pike. It formed part of an outfit which includes a yellow, drop-waist dress with a matching design. The dress was made by Elspeth Little. Gwen Pike was a graduate of Birmingham School of Art but trained in London at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and the Slade School of Art. She and Elspeth Little became established craftswomen and designers during the 1920s and 1930s, producing their own printed and painted textiles.
