Fashion — 1810-1815
Dress
Catalogue note by Natalie Rothstein. Brown and white silk, coarsely woven with a zig-zag design and a floral motif which together form a compartment containing a stylised flower reversed each line of the repeat. Both warp and weft have alternately brown and white silk threads which are used for ground or pattern as required. Material width: 19 1/2 ins; selvage: 3/16 ins. Repeat height: 8 1/4 ins; width: 4 3/4 ins. The dress has been cut about and I find it difficult to believe that it had anything to do with Princess Charlotte. The hem is lined with buff lustring, the bodice with slightly foxed linen. The pattern can be compared with Garthwaite's in the years 1752-55 series 5989 [V&A Museum].
