Dress

This outfit has a strong medieval and theatrical feel. It was worn by the concert singer Dorothea Crompton, who studied at the Guildhall School of Speech and Drama, and was probably made for her. It consists of three pieces: a velvet underdress with long ruched sleeves, a brocade tabard with fringed edges and the brocade cloak with a velvet collar and an Art Nouveau buckle by Liberty.

The dress is made of rose-red silk velvet, and the front is made from one panel with an opening from the right of the scoop neckline, descending to below the hips. The opening fastens with press studs, with metal hooks and thread eyes fastening the upper 11cms at the neckline. Each shoulder has one part of a press stud for securing the overdress when wearing. A long dart extends from the shoulder seam to below the bustline on either side, the upper part of each dart has a shaped piece of same fabric sewn between the seams. Between the side opening and a short neck dart are two long lengths of velvet with a running row of hand stitching which raises up the edges. The inserts on the front panel give the dress a 'Renaissance' appearance. The long sleeves are lined with rose coloured silk. The velvet sleeves have three vertical rows of stitching gathered to give a ruched effect, the seam edges are also ruched from underarm to cuff edge.
