Two shops opening directly onto the street. On the left is L. Levine kosher poulterer at number 73. Plucked birds hang from a rail while others lie on top of a crate. Bare bulbs illuminate the small interior. On the right, at 73A, are the premises of Sam Rapaport Provisions and Smoked Salmon. A man in an apron and cap stands inside the narrow shop, whose shelves are stacked with products. Outside stand two wooden barrels. Both businesses were probably based in the Jewish East End.
Fred Wilfred worked as Chief Photographer for Hawker Siddeley Aviation during the 1950s. In 1963 he started his own commercial and portrait studio in Hampton Hill. Wilfred was a member of the Richmond and Twickenham Photographic Society and a founder member of the London Portrait Group. Acclaimed for his portraiture and wedding photography, his documentary work, like this photograph, has remained largely unseen.
