Printed Ephemera — 2011-03
Placard, protest placard
This protest placard was made for and carried in the March for the Alternative demonstration that took place in London on 26th March 2011.
The anti-cuts against public spending march, also known as the March for the Alternative was organised by the Trades Union Congress. The march through central London that culminated in a rally in Hyde Park was estimated to have attracted 250,000 protestors including union members, public sector workers and families
A key argument against the public spending cuts, as indicated on this protest placard, was the Governmen'ts perceived unfair approach to taxation that benefited the rich at the expense of the poor.
The TUC General Secretary Len McCluskey offered an alternative solution to the country's economic position. In a BBC Interview he noted 'Our alternative is to concentrate on economic growth through tax fairness so, for example, if the government was brave enough, it would tackle the tax avoidance that robs the British taxpayer of a minimum of £25bn a year.'
