Printed Ephemera — 2011-03
Placard
This placard was made by Eliza, a university lecturer from London, who carried it on the March for the Alternative demonstration held in London on 26 March 2011. The demonstration was organised by the Trade Union Congress as a protest at the government's public spending cuts and attracted around half a million marchers. The placard was made the night before the demonstration from foam board and permanent marker. Eliza taped the placard to a stick she found along the route of the march.
Eliza's placard was a retort to Polly Toynbee's article in the Guardian newspaper on 5 November 2010 in which the journalist wrote, 'Sorry, students, but you're low in the pain pecking order'. Eliza's response adapted a quotation by the socialist artist and writer, William Morris, 'I do not want art for a few any more than education for a few, or freedom for a few'.
