Ground plans of Newgate Jail
A 'Ground plan of Newgate Jail before the recent [1858] alterations' together with the 'Present [1862] ground plan of Newgate', from page 596 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. The authors write that in about 1818 the prison was calculated to hold only 427 prisoners but "on one occasion about this time 822 prisoners, debtors and criminals, were huddled together, and sometimes even as many as 1200; which overcrowding created infectious jail fever. The prisoners were not provided with bedding, and the food allowed them was hardly sufficient to sustain life."
