The tailors' and shoemakers' room at Coldbath Fields Prison
Book illustration of the tailors' and shoemakers' room at Coldbath Fields Prison, from page 313 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. After being depressed by viewing the treadmill in action, the authors are pleased to come across an immense workshop where the men are engaged in "an occupation that is useful, and (judging from the countenances of the men) neither over-fatiguing nor degrading." Clothes, boots and shoes made at Coldbath Fields were supplied to Hanwell Lunatic Asylum.
