Distributing 'The Workers Press'
Activist distributing copies of 'The Workers Press' at the Briant Colour Printing Factory on the Old Kent Road, Peckham. The Press was a daily newspaper published by the Socialist Labour League in the early 1970s. In 1976 the newspaper was renamed 'News Line'. The Briant Colour Printing Factory was closed down suddenly in July 1972 as the company went into liquidation. Workers there were only informed of the situation that afternoon and were angry about their subsequent unemployment. They staged an 'occupation' of the building ejecting management from the premises. Workers occupied the building day and night for just over a year until the company was bought by a new owner Peter Bentley. Unfortunately the factory was closed down permanently on 16th November. Again the closure was rapid but this time security guards were sent in to the factory at night to make sure that there was no trouble from workers.
