Port & River — 1950-1960
Letter head
Printed letter head for the National Amalgamated Stevedores and Dockers Union, around 1960. Originally formed as the Amalgamated Stevedores' Labour Protection League in 1872, it amalgamated with members of the Amalgamated Society of Watermen, Lightermen and Bargemen in 1922 and became the National Amalgamated Stevedores, Lightermen, Watermen and Dockers. Three years later the watermen and lightermen broke away to form their own union, the Watermen, Lightermen, Tugmen and Bargemen's Union. The remaining part of the union emerged as the National Amalgamated Stevedores and Dockers Union. Although it had always been a rival it finally merged with the Transport & General Workers Union in 1982.
