Convicts scraping shot
Book illustration of convicts scraping shot from page 220 of 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. The authors describe various work activities undertaken in the Arsenal by convicts. These include breaking granite, stacking timber, clearing rubbish , and filing and polishing rusty shells. "All of them were busy. The officer takes care of that; for he is fined one shilling every time one of his men is caught idling, while the escape of one entails his dismissal."
