Ticket-of-leave men
An illustration of a ticket-of-leave men, from a photograph by Herbert Watkins, depicted in the book 'The criminal prisons of London and scenes of prison life' by Henry Mayhew and John Binny. A ticket-of-leave was a form of licence which allowed convicts out of prison early, before the expiration of the full sentence, subject to certain conditions. The system allowed convicts who exhibited good conduct and industry to earn an living and adapt to living outside of prison. The problems encountered by a ticket-of-leave man, attempting to rebuild his life, was dramatised in Tom Taylor's popular play 'The Ticket of Leave Man' which opened at the Olympic Theatre on 27 March 1863.
