Stomacher
White satin embroidered in coloured silks and metal thread and strip. Symmetrical design with large flower surrounded by smaller flowers and leaves. Top appliquéd with metal thread in fringe design. Lined with white linen. Tapers to two points at lower edge. Five hooks for attaching to dress (one missing) at right edge. Condition: poor, silk discoloured, metal threads worn and tarnished; backing stained.
goes with dress A12411/1.
Silk and linen are pieced with small running stitches; perimeter edges are finished by turning raw edges of silk and lining in towards each other and sewing with small fell stitches from the lining side.
Metal eyes may not be original; there is a tuft of thread in the linen lining at the centre of the upper edge, there is also the remnant of linen tape caught up in this – something used to be sewn here, whether it was intentionally removed or has deteriorated is unclear.
