School trip to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich
Boy looking through a telescope on a school trip to the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, June 1962. The Royal Observatory was founded in 1675 by King Charles II to improve navigation at sea and astronomers working here could find the longitude of places, determining the exact point East or West. The Royal Observatory is also the source of the Prime Meridian of the World meaning that every place in the world is measured in terms of its distance from this line.
