Christmas nativity play at the Susan Lawrence School
Christmas nativity play at the Susan Lawrence School in Poplar, 1962. The school was built between 1949-51 as part of the 'Live Architecture' exhibition at the Festival of Britain. The school was named in honour of Susan Lawrence who was one of the first female MPs in England. She was elected to Poplar Council in 1919 when the Government proposed large rate increases and along with fellow councilors she suggested that Poplar refused to pay so that areas like Kensington and Chelsea would contribute more. She was arrested and served time in Holloway prison.
