LCS Co-Operative Store, Highgate
Shoppers in the London Co-Operative Society (LCS) store in Highgate. The LCS was formed in 1920 with the amalgamation of two large consumer societies. The societies offered the use of a range of facilities to its members with stores such as chemists, grocers, butchers, furniture stores, and services such as funerals and guesthouses. In the early 1950s when the society was at its largest there were over 500 stores available for use by its members in London. With the introduction of chain supermarkets the societies lost membership and the LCS merged with the Co-operative Retail Society in 1981.
