Photography — 1954-08
Bayswater, August 1954
Young boy playing in a puddle at the Clydesdale Adventure Playground, Camberwell. In the early 1950s Lady Allen advocated the creation of junk playgrounds created from waste grounds and derelict bomb sites in London. She believed that children could use these areas to build, be creative, take risks and play, an important way of escaping from the impoverished conditions in which they lived. The Clydesdale playground was created in 1949 and officially opened in 1952.
