Petticoat Lane Market, 1952
A second hand clothes and goods market has been held on this site every Sunday since the 1700s. The road was originally named Petticoat Lane hence the market’s name but in the 1830s it was renamed Middlesex Street. During the early 1900s there wereattemptsunder the Sunday traiding laws to close the market to the extent that buses and fire engines were driven down the street forcing stallsto move however the market proved too popular and survives to this day.
