The poor man's guardian, No. 4
Issue number 4 of 'The Poor Man's Guardian' for Saturday 27 November 1847. The image on the title page is of a model lodging house in George Street, St Giles's which had opened on 9th August. It could accommodate 104 lodgers who paid 2s 4d a week rent, which included salt, soap, and two towels. The lodging house included a library, kitchen, sitting room, wash-house, and drying closet, as well as a small so-called rabbit-hutch room "so named from its being fitted up with ranges of meat safes, each one about a foot wide by about eighteen inches high; with perforated zinc front and lock and key."
