The poor man's guardian, No. 3
No. 3 of 'The Poor Man's Guardian' for Saturday 20 November 1847. The image on the front cover is of Field Lane Lodging House which the Chairman of the Poor Man's Guardian Society, Charles Cochrane, visited on Saturday 19 November 1847. In the cellar he discovered in one corner "what was termed an accommodation to meet the usual exigencies of the lodgers generally" while in the other corner was a water-butt which supplied the tenants with water. "The height of the cellar did not exceed from four to five feet and there was not a beam or rafter in it, that was not in an advanced state of decay in consequence of the emanations from the feculence with which the ground was covered all around."
