Documents relating to the rights of the Legal Quays and Wharfingers, especially in relation to Customs requirements
Unbound manuscript comprised of correspondence, printed copies of Orders made by the Commissioners of Customs affecting the Port of London between January 1840 and February 1843, a list of import goods which may only be lodged in secure warehouses (part of an Act passed in the fourth year of the reign of George IV) and a return of articles which do not need to be lodged in places without specific security requirements.
The correspondence is conducted with the London Dock Company, the East and West India Dock Company, individual wharfingers and the Office of Committee of Privy Council for Trade, and arises from the dock companies' opposition to the threat of increased rights for the legal quays.
Includes letters from Sir Stafford Northcote as secretary to W.E. Gladstone.
