Bodice, dress bodice
This dress was worn by Lady Benson at the Delhi Durbar. The dress has a separate bodice and skirt. The front panel of the skirt and band of the bodice are embroidered with a design from the carving on the Red Stone Palace built for Mariam Bibi. The bodice is decorated with lace made by Indian women taught by Christian missionaries.
The Delhi Durbar, meaning ‘Court of Delhi’, was a mass assembly at Coronation Park, Delhi, India to commemorate the coronation of a King and Queen of the United Kingdom. Also known as the Imperial Durbar, it was held three times in 1877, 1903, and 1911 at the height of the British Empire. The 1911 Durbar was the only one to be attended by the sovereign: George V.
