Breeches
These brown silk velvet breeches are part of a three piece suit that belonged to eighteenth-century actor and playwright David Garrick (1717-1779). They goes with jacket (28.92a) and waistcoat (28.92b).
The breeches have a fall front, hip pockets and knee fastenings. There are two bone buttons, one near each side seam, for the attachment of waistcoat tape fastenings. Two black metal buttons, a later addition for braces, are secured to the back of the breeches at the waistline and are stamped with the name: 'Gibbs & Deighton, London'.
David Garrick sat for numerous portraits during his life. These breeches are part of the suit worn by Garrick in a 1772-1773 portrait with his wife, Eva Maria Garrick (née Veigel) by Joshua Reynolds, National Portrait Gallery; a 1764 portrait by Pompeo Batoni, Ashmolean and a c.1765 portait by Angelica Kauffman, Burghley House, Stamford
