Saxon & Medieval — Early Medieval; late 12th-early 13th century
Seal of Ingelram de Préaux;
This bronze seal die shows the arms of the de Préaux family: a spread eagle. It is inscribed '+SIGILLVM: INGELRAM: DEPREAUS' - 'seal of Ingelram de Préaux'. The family, from near Rouen, were important Norman landowners in the 1100s, having property in both England and Normandy. When King John of England lost control of Normandy to the French king Philippe Auguste in 1204, the family was split. There were six brothers, most of whom swore allegiance to the French king and retained their lands in France. But two, Peter and Ingelram, remained loyal to John. Ingelram accompanied King John on many journeys and added his seal as witness to deeds and charters issued by the king. He was still in the king's service in 1213.
