Punch, or the London Charivari
This wood engraving by John Leech entitled Pin Money/Needle Money appeared in Punch Magazine, December 1849. It reflects growing public concern with the plight of seamstresses working in London's fashion houses. Here Leech contrasts, in two separate images, the poverty stricken seamstress working long hours in an unventilated and poorly lit room with a privileged and wealthy woman at her dressing table who is having her hair pinned by a servant.
