Archaeology — 19th century
Brick
Two 19th century bricks found on an archaeological excavation at Shoreditch Park in Hackney. Archaeologists, working with community groups and schoolchildren, discovered the remains of a street (Dorchester Street), which had been severely damaged by bombing during the Second World War. At the end of the war, only 6 houses out of 47 on the street were still standing and the residents had to be housed in temporary prefabs. In the 1980s the area was cleared and turned into a park. These bricks came from the foundations of one of the demolished houses.
