Soldiers firing a salute from the Thames riverside during the funeral of George VI
George VI died on 6 February 1952 at Sandringham and was buried at St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, on 15 February. During the state funeral, soldiers fired cannons from the Thames riverside to mark the occasion.
Gun salutes began as a naval tradition and evolved to form a part of particularly important ceremonies and events. 21 volleys were fired for heads of state when they died.
The Tower of London can here be seen in the background, partly obscured by the smoke issuing from the cannons.
