Photography — 1974
Negative, acetate
The Spitalfields Great Synagogue on the corner of Fournier Street and Brick Lane with a young Asian child in the foreground. Postwar, London’s Jewish community moved out of the East End to prosperous northern suburbs like Golders Green, as did the congregation of this synagogue. The building was converted in 1976 to serve the religious needs of the local Bengali population. Margaret Macdonald was an art teacher who took up photography and became interested in the Spitalfields area.
