Dock hook, bale hook
This type of dock hook was known as a bale hook. It was used for handling large bales of cargoes like wool from Australia. Because dock hooks were usually owned by the individual docker, they were sometimes customised or given individual identification marks. This one was used on the Wool Floor in the warehouses at the London Docks at Wapping. The handle has been shaped to fit more comfortably in the hand. See DK86.11/605 to compare it with the standard bale hook used in the Port of London.
