Street scene in Petticoat Lane
One of a series of photographs of Petticoat Lane, East London by the photographer Henry Grant.
Petticoat Lane was, and still is today, the site of an outdoor market that attracts huge crowds. Among the goods for sale were china, London paraphernalia (such as flags, street signs, toy buses and guards), clothing and accessories.
This is a view of visitors to the market walking by a sign marked 'FLEE FROM THE WRATH TO COME'. Although a man on the far right gazes straight at the camera, others seem oblivious to the presence of a photographer.
