A stall at Petticoat Lane market
This stall at Petticoat Lane market is selling London paraphernalia, including flags, dolls, tea towels and key rings. A replica of a policeman's helmet can be seen on the top right. The photographer, mingling among the crowd, depicts the people who have gathered around the stall to peruse the goods on display.
The street market, which continues today, dates back to the 17th century and is thought to be named after the petticoats on sale there. Located in the Spitalfields areas of the East End, the market continues to sell a range of collectables and second-hand goods.
