Day trippers enjoying the sand on Tower Beach
The Tower of London Children’s Beach, or Tower Beach, was opened in July 1934. More than 1,500 tons of sand were transported to the Thames foreshore near Tower Bridge creating a small beach on the River Thames. It proved to be extremely popular and hundreds of thousands of people visited the beach. The river’s tide meant that the beach was open for a couple of hours a day. The beach was not accessible during the Second World War and finally closed due to the pollution of the Thames in 1971.
